You Don’t Need to Be Photogenic to Have a Photoshoot

“I’d love to do a photoshoot, but I’m just not photogenic.”

We hear some version of this all the time.

And usually, it comes from women who have spent years avoiding cameras, picking apart photographs of themselves, or convincing themselves that looking good in photos is something that comes naturally to everyone else.

It isn’t.

Being “photogenic” isn’t a requirement for a Watson & Co. experience. In fact, knowing what to do in front of a camera isn’t your job at all.

That’s ours.

You’re Not Expected to Know How to Pose

Most of the women we photograph aren’t professional models.

They don’t arrive knowing where to put their hands, how to stand, what expression to make or which angle works best for them.

And we don’t expect them to.

Throughout your shoot, you’ll be directed through everything from the bigger poses right down to the smallest details where to look, how to position your hands, where to place your weight and even the expression we want from you.

You don’t have to turn up knowing how to look good in photographs.

You just have to turn up.

Especially If You’ve Worked Hard for Your Body

For the women we photograph who train, there’s another side to this.

You can spend years building your body and still have absolutely no idea how to show it properly in a photograph.

Lighting, posing and camera angle can completely change the way a physique translates into an image.

The shape you've built, the definition in your back, your legs, your shoulders, your waist all of it can disappear in a badly taken photograph.

That’s why our approach isn’t simply to point a camera at you and hope for the best.

We build the lighting and posing around you.

The goal is to create photographs that actually show what you've worked for while still feeling like you.

You Don’t Need to Get in Shape First

This is another one we hear constantly.

“I just want to lose a little more weight first.”

“I’ll book when I’m a bit leaner.”

“I’m not quite ready yet.”

There’s nothing wrong with having goals. But there will nearly always be another goal.

Another few pounds.

Another competition.

Another training block.

Another point where you think you’ll finally be “ready”.

A photoshoot doesn’t have to mark the moment you reached some imaginary perfect version of yourself.

It can simply document this version.

The body you have now. The work you've already done. The person you've become getting here.

That version deserves to exist in photographs too.

The First 10 Minutes Are Usually the Hardest

We know stepping onto a studio set can feel intimidating.

You're standing underneath professional lighting with a camera pointed at you, and suddenly you're very aware of everything you're doing.

That feeling normally disappears surprisingly quickly.

We start simple.

We direct you.

We show you what’s working.

And gradually something changes.

You stop thinking about every movement.

You start trusting the process.

And eventually, the woman who walked into the studio saying “I’m going to be so awkward” is confidently moving through the shoot wondering why she was ever worried in the first place.

That transformation is one of our favourite parts of what we do.

This Is More Than Turning Up for Photographs

Of course, you leave with photographs.

But the experience itself matters just as much.

There’s something powerful about deliberately making time to celebrate yourself.

Not your job.

Not your relationship.

Not what everyone else needs from you.

You.

Your body.

Your personality.

Your confidence.

Your hard work.

And sometimes seeing yourself through somebody else's lens without all the criticism you've become accustomed to attaching to your reflection — can be incredibly powerful.

So, Are You Photogenic?

Probably more than you think.

But it doesn't actually matter.

You don't need modelling experience.

You don't need to know how to pose.

You don't need to reach a certain weight.

And you definitely don't need to become more confident before you're allowed to book a photoshoot.

You bring yourself. We’ll take care of the rest.

Watson & Co. creates photography experiences for women who train, designed around professional direction, flattering lighting and imagery that celebrates the work you’ve put into becoming who you are.
