Studio vs Location Fitness Shoots, Which Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we get asked before a shoot is where it will take place.

Studio or location? Gym or outdoor? Controlled environment or somewhere with context and atmosphere?

The honest answer is that there is no universally correct choice. The right setting depends entirely on what you are trying to achieve and what you want your images to feel like. Here is a breakdown of both options to help you decide.

Studio fitness shoots control, consistency, and focus

A studio shoot puts the subject you at the centre of every frame. There is no competing background, no distracting environment, no context that pulls the eye away from the person in front of the lens.

For fitness portraits this is incredibly powerful. The definition you have built, the physicality, the presence all of it becomes the entire image. Nothing competes with it.

Studio lighting also gives us complete control over how your body and your skin are lit. We can create drama with hard light and deep shadows, softness with a large diffused source, or a clean editorial look with balanced key and rim lighting. Every frame is intentional.

Studio shoots are ideal if you want images that feel cinematic and editorial, if you want to focus on physique and definition, or if the aesthetic you are going for is bold, clean, and striking rather than contextual.

Location and gym shoots environment, atmosphere, and story

A location or gym shoot adds a layer of context that a studio cannot replicate. The environment becomes part of the image it tells a story about who you are, where you train, and what your lifestyle looks like.

For women who train, shooting in the gym can be incredibly powerful. The equipment, the lighting, the atmosphere it all communicates something about the discipline and the dedication behind the physique. The image does not just show what you look like. It shows where you built it.

Location shoots whether that is on the beach, in an urban setting, or in a villa abroad add a completely different energy. They can feel more editorial, more expansive, more cinematic in a way that moves beyond the gym context entirely.

Location shoots are ideal if you want images with atmosphere and context, if the environment is part of your story, or if you want something that feels more lifestyle-led alongside the more structured editorial frames.

Can you do both?

Yes and many of our clients do.

Our Goddess Experience package is built around multiple looks, environments, and moods in a single extended session. This means you can combine studio editorial portraits with gym or location frames in one shoot day, giving you a full gallery that covers every dimension of who you are.

If you are not sure which direction is right for your shoot, that is exactly what our consultation call is for. We will talk through what you are hoping to achieve and recommend the approach that serves those goals best.
